Hurricane Gustav Call To Action
Image"Extremely dangerous" storm surges battered the Louisiana coastline as Gustav rolled ashore around 10 AM CDT on Monday.  The USECC is currently on the scene offering assistance.  Here is an update provided by Chaplain Steve this afternoon...

The US Emergency Chaplains Corps has been in contact with officials in the gulf and will be responding to the disaster and aftermath.  USECC, like so many other orgainzations needs your financial assistance at once.  We will be assisting First Responder agencies just like we did in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita three years ago.  Immediate assistance is needed as will mid to long range assistance (through the end of the year) is also expected because of the length of the incident.

Please remember that all donations given to USECC are tax deductable.  You may structure your gifts to span over the next few months as well.

He's The Closest Thing To A Hero

“He's The Closest Thing To A Hero” is a fantastic song written to all firefighters and First Responders in tribute to their valiant work. Written by professional songwriter Jimmy Jack Whitaker, it is preformed by one of our own, Firefighter Frank Pizarro of FDNY. There is no doubt in my mind that this song will be sung across the country at conferences, shows, memorials and other events in the fire service from this day forward.

You will undoubtedly be reminded of calls in your area since the footage was gathered from incidents around the nation and is actual footage. This is a heart-warming song about friends, family and First Responders we will all relate too and identify with. It is an encouragement for one and all to uphold the integrity and tradition of our calling.

“Being a firefighter, this is the type of song that would give that extra strength to push for that last burning room........TO SAVE A LIFE” -Jamal Braithwaite, FDNY Ladder 51, Da Dawg House.

“Inspiring and moving, great melody and compelling performance. Rare is the song where all these qualities collide. I think any member of our profession would be proud and humbled after hearing such a song” -Capt. Joe Fincher, New Orleans Fire Department.

From Chaplain Steve...
Wow, where to start in relating our experience from our annual 911 outreach this year in Groesbeck, Texas. Though not the largest, this was by far the most extensive project we've undertaken.

Do you have a soft spot or loyalty for First Responders (Police, Fire & EMS departments)? Do you believe they are in our communities to serve and protect us? Do you believe they are worthy of of our support and respect?

The United States Emergency Chaplains Corps (USECC) does as well. It is our calling to serve in this field in times of disaster and crisis as well as in “normal” times. Do you believe God wants spiritual care for them and their families?

The USECC wishes to honor the memory of Chief Robert Leland Knight, of the Teague, Texas Volunteer Fire Department, who died July 5, 2008, from injuries sustained when a wall collapsed while advancing a hoseline during a structural fire in downtown Teague.  Chief Knight was a 19-year veteran of the Department, the last nine as Chief, and in 2007 was named Teague Citizen of the Year.

WHAT''S A CHAPLAIN

That may sound a little strange in this post 911 era but it wasn''t too long ago that question did come up in some areas. Let me attempt to shed a little insight on this subject.
WHEN IT''S ONE OF OUR OWN
By Chaplain Steve Holden

There are many times the subject of conversation in firehouses around the country turns to reminiscing about old calls. "You remember when we did . . ."
